Chiropractic Care Restores Healthy Movement

The approach to your chiropractic care will depend on which of three stages best describes your condition.

  • Care for patients in the first stage involves more intensive care with more frequent visits over the first days or weeks to help resolve the most obvious symptoms causing pain or discomfort.
  • The second stage is rehabilitative or reconstructive care. With the most obvious symptoms gone, visit frequency can often be reduced. Rehabilitative care is designed to strengthen the supporting structures of the spine and help restore your health to its highest potential.
  • The third stage is perhaps the most valuable type of care, known as wellness maintenance or preventive care. This third stage of care consists of regular chiropractic checkups to detect and correct little problems before they become serious.

Like periodic eye examinations and regular visits to the dentist, chiropractic care respects the time it takes for the body to heal, and helps the healing to happen without dysfunction. Think of it as orthodontics for the spine. Timely chiropractic care restores proper alignment so your body can heal properly, and allows maximum healthy functioning of your spine and related muscles and nerves to be restored.

What to Expect

The primary course of care will be specific chiropractic adjustments. This will help return individual spinal bones to their proper motion and position over time. There are hundreds of ways of using carefully directed and controlled pressure to restore better position and motion to “stuck” or fixated spinal joints.

Dr. Santoliva will likely use a push or pull to help get “stuck” bones moving again. This may require a quick thrust, or in other instances a slow, constant pressure. Sometimes only one area of the spine is adjusted, and other times the entire spine will receive attention. At times Dr. Santoliva may use only her hands, while at other times she will use an Actuator, a small, hand-held instrument used to deliver consistent and measured force to a concentrated area.

Special tables can be used, such as a traction table that moves to gently stretch the patient’s spine as it is adjusted. Tables with drop away sections are used to reduce the adjusting force naturally. Adjusting methods are modified for each patient’s size, weight and condition. Dr. Santoliva’s approach is informed by her extensive training, clinical experience, and the particular spinal problem of the patient.

Adjustment (or manipulation) of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The same thing occurs when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint, which results in gas bubbles being released. There is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved.

Dr. Santoliva may recommend additional procedures or suggest other ways to help reduce inflammation, provide relief, or enhance the healing process. These may include ice, heat, muscle and soft tissue rehabilitation, nutritional advice, exercises, or other procedures.

Stages of Chiropractic Care

The amount and duration of chiropractic treatment necessary to restore healthy spinal functioning depends on the severity of vertebral subluxation complex (fixations in the joints of the spine). Some patients enjoy immediate results, while others find their recovery takes several months or longer. Children often respond quickly, while adults with long-standing spinal problems heal more slowly.

Recovering your health will require an investment of your time and money, so you can enjoy long-term health dividends. Once you have taken the time to re-train and re-heal your body through proper chiropractic care, you will be able to move in balanced way, free of malfunctioning due to stress or injury, and it is well worth it! With appropriate chiropractic care, slowing, stopping or decreased rate of degeneration may be expected, and your long-term optimized health will be your reward.
